Certificate in Advanced English Pre-CAE & (CAE)

The Cambridge English For Life Certificate in Advanced English Preparatory (Pre-CAE) course is highly recommended to students, especially young teenage learners who have strong language proficiency which enables them to deal with a variety of situations but may not have encountered more demanding situations such as discussing abstract or cultural topics with a good degree of fluency, maturity and depth.

This Pre-CAE course is also recommended to mature learners who are expected to use a variety of language features and skills in a wide range of situations, but whose efforts are often hampered by insufficient linguistic resources and abilities at the required levels.

The CEFL Pre-CAE course is designed for learners who have the ability to:

  • read with understanding written material in a variety of forms and to comment on its effectiveness
  • show knowledge and understanding of features of the English language
  • write clearly, accurately and effectively for a particular purpose or audience.

At the end of the course, learners can expect to be able to:

  • use the language to cope with high-level academic, executive and management situations
  • recount personal experiences, views and feelings
  • use language to inform and explain
  • show an awareness of how spoken and written communication varies according to situation, purpose and audience
  • read a variety of texts accurately and with confidence
  • select, retrieve, evaluate and combine information from written texts
  • appreciate the ways writers make use of language
  • employ different forms of writing to suit a range of purposes
  • plan, organise and paragraph written work, using appropriate punctuation
  • choose vocabulary which is suited to its purpose and audience, and use correct grammar and punctuation
  • write in standard English
  • spell accurately the words within the working vocabulary, and present finished work clearly and attractively, similar in all aspects to that of 'A' Level studies
Learners are advised to first take a placement test to determine which course is appropriate to their level of English language proficiency. The one-hour test can be arranged to be taken at any CEFL Centre. At the end of the course, they can opt to sit for the appropriate level exam from Cambridge ESOL Examinations.

At Level Four of the Cambridge ESOL Main Suite of examinations, the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) is designed to offer a high-level qualification to individuals who wish to use English for professional or study purposes. It is also designed to encourage the development of the skills required by learners progressing towards scholastic achievement, with emphasis on real-world tasks.

Apart from widespread corporate recognition, CAE is also accepted by a majority of educational institutions and universities in Britain, Australasia, North America and around the world as fulfilling their English language entrance requirements.

Learners at this Competent (C1) Level will be able to use language structures with ease and fluency, express opinions and take part in discussions and arguments in a culturally acceptable way. They are also aware of the relationship between the language and the culture it exists in, and of the significance of the register used in a broad range of social contexts.

The CAE course covers all four language skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing in an international, communicative context. At the end of this course, learners can expect to be able to:

  • cope confidently in most situations that would arise in an English-speaking country – socially, professionally and in higher education
  • adapt their language use to a variety of social situations
  • develop their own interests in reading both factual and fictional texts
  • produce a variety of types of texts and utterances such as letters of varying degrees of formality
  • use language in a creative and flexible way, with the ability to respond appropriately to unforeseen as well as predictable situations, producing utterances of a suitable length and complexity

The Cambridge English For Life Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) course is designed to provide the most effective preparation for the CAE examination by:

  • teaching learners the language, skills and techniques they need for exam  success
  • building learners’ confidence by explaining what they have to do, showing them how to do it and providing plenty of practice at regular intervals throughout the course
  • making the preparation fun with thought-provoking texts and motivating practice activities
  • providing thorough training and guidance on how to deal with the new question types
