The Cambridge English For Life Certificate in B2 First Preparatory (Pre B2 First) course is highly recommended to students, especially young teenage learners who have strong language proficiency which enables them to deal with a variety of situations, but may not have encountered more demanding situations such as discussing abstract or cultural topics with a good degree of fluency, maturity and depth.

This Pre B2 First course is also recommended to mature learners who are expected to use a variety of language features and skills in a wide range of situations, but whose efforts are often hampered by insufficient linguistic resources and abilities at the required levels.

The CEFL Pre B2 First course is designed for learners who are able to handle some of the main structures of the language, using a range of vocabulary and appropriate communicative strategies in a variety of social functions. At the end of the course, learners are expected to:

  • communicate accurately, appropriately and effectively in speech and writing
  • understand and respond appropriately and imaginatively to what they read and experience
  • enjoy and appreciate reading texts in the English language
  • produce written texts of various types, showing the ability to develop an argument as well as describe or recount events similar in context to ‘O’ Level English

Learners at the B2 First level are described as Independent (Level B2) users, which correspond to what is often referred to as an upper-intermediate stage of proficiency. They expected to have sufficient ability to operate effectively in English in a variety of work situations in the real world as well as the context of taking a course of study using the English medium.

B2 First is officially recognised by employers around the world for commerce and industry. Many universities and educational institutions accept B2 First for their English language entrance requirements.

The B2 First course covers all four language skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing in an international, communicative context. At the end of this course, learners are expected to:

  • handle the main structures of the language with some confidence
  • demonstrate knowledge of a wide range of vocabulary
  • use appropriate communication strategies in a variety of situations
  • distinguish between main and subsidiary points and between the gist of a text and specific details
  • produce written texts of various types, showing the ability to develop an argument as well as describe or recount event

The B2 First course syllabus and assessment is designed to ensure that learners are able to function with some degree of consistency in a wide range of international contexts.

The B2 First course is designed to effectively prepare learners for the B2 First examination by:

  • teaching the language, skills and techniques needed for exam success
  • building confidence by explaining what they have to do, showing them how to do it and providing plenty of practice at regular intervals throughout the course
  • making the preparation fun with engaging texts and motivating practice activities
  • providing thorough training and guidance on how to deal with unfamiliar questions

Learners are advised to first take a placement test to determine which course is appropriate to their level of English language proficiency. This one-hour test can be taken at any CEFL Centre. At the end of the course, they can opt to sit for the appropriate level exam from Cambridge Assessment English.
