Cambridge English Qualifications: C1 Advanced

The C1 Advanced examination is for candidates who can communicate in English at an advanced level who wish to pursue a managerial or professional career, or to follow a course of academic study at university.

C1 Advanced is aimed at learners who need to show that they can:

  • Enrol for an academic course at university level
  • Effectively interact with people at managerial or professional level
  • Conduct challenging research

Exam Components

C1 Advanced has four components – Reading and Use of English, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Each of the four test components contributes to a profile which defines the candidate's overall communicative language ability at this level.

Paper 1: Reading and Use of English

1 hour 30 minutes

Candidates are expected to be able to deal confidently with different types of text, such as fiction, newspapers and magazines.

Paper 2: Writing

1 hour 30 minutes

Candidates are expected to show that they can produce two different pieces of writing such as essays, letters/emails, proposals, reports and reviews.

Paper 3: Listening

Approximately 40 minutes

Candidates are tested on their ability to understand the meaning from a range of spoken material such as radio broadcasts, speeches, talks and everyday conversations.

Paper 4: Speaking

Approximately 15 minutes

Candidates are expected to show their ability to take part in different types of interactions with the speaking examiner and their speaking partners including exchanging ideas, suggesting, speculating, evaluating, and reaching a decision through negotiation.
